Roblox Games Will Soon Show ‘Top Trending’ and Genre Tags

Roblox is about to change how its games (sorry, “experiences”) show up on the platform, and it could make finding what to play way easier. According to a staff post from late August, Roblox is testing new subtitle tags on game tiles that highlight genres and trending status.

As a result, instead of just seeing ratings under a game’s title, you might soon spot labels like “Adventure” or “Top Trending.” Right now, when you’re scrolling through Roblox, most games just have their name, thumbnail, and rating.

That rating system isn’t going anywhere, but Roblox is experimenting with adding extra info like genre tags such as “Survival,” “Adventure,” “Roleplay,” etc. and social proof tags like “Top Trending” or “Up-and-Coming.”

The idea here is pretty simple. Sometimes people click because a game has a high rating, but other times you just want to know what type of game it actually is. Roblox thinks showing more context will help players find stuff they’re genuinely into instead of randomly hopping between experiences that don’t click.

Don’t expect this to suddenly show up across the entire platform tomorrow. Roblox says the test will start small, just a limited set of users, and only on certain sorts like “Recommended For You.” Ratings will still always be visible on the full Experience Details page, so that part isn’t changing.

If this works, it could change how smaller or newer games get discovered. A fresh experience tagged as “Up-and-Coming” might tempt players who’d normally just scroll past. And for users, knowing a game is “Survival” vs. “Tycoon” before clicking in is… honestly just common sense. Why hasn’t Roblox done this already?

Of course, there’s the flip side. “Top Trending” could easily get spammy if everyone flocks to the same few games, and some developers might worry genre labels will box them in. Roblox says the goal is higher-quality engagement (their words: better QPTR and play quality), but we’ll see how that plays out.
